Lumineers at Ahwatukee Dentistry
When you look in the mirror, do the teeth that stare back make you want to hide your smile? If so, you definitely aren’t alone. Teeth are often cited as one of the first things that many of us would like to change about our appearance. People with an attractive smile are considered to be more desirable, more successful, healthier and even happier than those whose teeth leave something to be desired. Thankfully, cosmetic dentistry is now more accessible and affordable than in previous years, making achieving that perfect smile easier than ever.
What are Lumineers and how are the different from conventional veneers?
Lumineers are a popular cosmetic dentistry solution, and they are often used as an alternative to porcelain veneers, as they are very similar. Both use porcelain covers to hide imperfections on the outside of the teeth, such as severe discoloration, chips or minor gaps between the teeth. Nevertheless, there are some distinct differences between them.
The main difference between Lumineers and traditional veneers is that Lumineers are just a fraction of the thickness – approximately 0.2mm to be exact. This means that they much more closely resemble the high-translucency of natural enamel. The difference in thickness also affects the procedure to fit them. While conventional veneers require a reasonable amount of your original tooth structure to be removed in order for them to fit properly, Lumineers are so thin that there is little to no tooth reduction necessary. This makes the process of fitting them painless and simple, and extremely low risk.
Despite their thinness, Lumineers are extremely durable and have been known to last patients upwards of 20 years before replacement is required.
What issues can Lumineers help address?
Lumineers can eliminate a range of cosmetic dental problem, including:
- Severe discoloration, particularly that which teeth whitening has not been able to resolve
- Teeth that are mildly crooked
- Teeth that have small gaps between them
- Teeth which are not uniform sizes
- Poor alignment
- Cracks in teeth
- Chips and other damage to the surface of the enamel
The process of receiving Lumineers is easy and stress-free. Once you have had your initial consultation and established that Lumineers are the best solution for your dental problems, you will be booked in for two separate visits.
On the first visit, we will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth. No anesthetic will be required as this involves simply placing putty over your teeth so that there is mold of their shape and size. These will be sent to the laboratory along with your other information and used to make your custom-designed Lumineers. You will then be free to go home.
On your second visit, which is normally 10-14 days later, your new Lumineers will be ready to be placed. However, before securing them permanently, we will try them on you to ensure that they are a good fit and give you the aesthetic improvements that you planned. Each Lumineer is applied individually using special adhesive. Again, no drilling is required and so no anesthetic is needed.
If a small amount of tooth reduction is necessary, you will be advised this at your consultation appointment. This may mean that a little anesthetic is used in your second visit, so that the enamel can be filed down ever so slightly before your Lumineers are placed. We will work with you to keep you calm and comfortable, and most patients find that the process to be completely painless and straightforward.
